Coat Malus

This post is about my first pattern test in 2020.

Testing patterns is really fun and interesting to me as you get insights on upcoming patterns during the production process.

This time I was able to test a more difficult pattern by Theresa from Makesa Schnittdesign. Theresa is a really nice and beautiful designer and I felt great to be able to hopefully support her pattern production with my feedback.

The coat is in a trenchcoat style and I sewed it out of a smokey tencel by Atelier Brunette and a striped woven as lining. I ordered these fabrics from Stoffquelle. The fabric shop from Julia is really great with quick shipping and high quality and soft fabric.

The pattern includes great instructions in fitting the pattern to your own body and adjust for example the length of each pattern piece.

Theresa really took her time to describe every step carefully so it becomes kind of easy to sew your own coat.

Design elements of this pattern are the saddle, the bigger waist belt and the two small belts around the wrists as well as in my case the buttons.

Of course the testing process of a pattern can still include some obstacles and in this case my coat didn't turned out as I invisioned it before. I think my fabric and colour choice and also my choice of the buttons was kind of wrong for the vision I had but I'm still happy with the result.

Choosing the right fabric is a bit more difficult when there are no design examples available. But now you can check out the Lookbook on Theresa's blog where she also describes the different fabrics the pattern testers used. So if you want to sew your own coat definetly go check that out!

In total I would say this pattern is great if you want to tackle a more challenging project and you can totally use different design elements to change the look and make it your own.

I will wear mine as a spring coat. Even if I know this might not become my go to coat pattern because it's not really my style I'm so happy about the opportunity to learn something with this pattern. And I know I can use the detailled instructions and what I've learned in the next more difficult project.
